My Grandma

I used to spend a lot of time with each grandma. My grandma Borges (my dad’s mom) would take me for weeks at a time. She taught me to macrame, she taught me how to make a noise blowing on a thick piece of grass. We would go on a walk every day and I’d help her walk (she couldn’t see well).

I would lay across her lap and she would rub my back for what seemed like hours. She was always soft and gentle and patient.

She was very neat. She taught me her way of making a bed. There are so many wonderful memories that I have of her.

I always dreamed of having the same relationship with my grandkids, especially a granddaughter. I wanted to be a confidant, a mentor, a soft place to land and a beat friend. I dreamed of so much. I wanted to be so close to you.

I’m so sorry that I cannot ever be that for you.
